Important: This is an educational estimate. The treatment of permissible personal gold jewellery differs among schools of Islamic law. The calculator uses pure-gold equivalent for valuation and lets you choose a recognized weight convention. Follow qualified scholarly guidance for your circumstances.

A Gold Zakat Calculator helps estimate Zakat on gold by converting the gold you own into a consistent weight and purity, valuing it at the current gold price, checking the selected Nisab threshold, and calculating 2.5% when the relevant conditions are satisfied. The arithmetic is straightforward, but the Islamic ruling can depend on why the gold is owned and which scholarly view applies to personal jewellery.

This page therefore separates two questions: calculation and fiqh. The calculator handles grams, tola, troy ounces, karat purity, value and the standard 2.5% arithmetic. It does not decide disputed questions for you, such as whether permissible personal jewellery is zakatable under the school of law you follow.

How the Gold Zakat Calculator Works

Enter the total weight of the gold you want to assess, choose grams, tola or troy ounces, select the purity, and enter the current market price of 24K gold per gram in your currency. The tool converts the weight to grams and then calculates the pure-gold equivalent.

For example, 100 grams of 22K gold is not treated as 100 grams of pure 24K gold for valuation. Using a 91.67% purity factor, its pure-gold equivalent is approximately 91.67 grams. The calculator then values that amount using the current 24K price per gram.

Gold Zakat Formula

Pure gold equivalent = Total grams × Purity factor
Gold value = Pure gold equivalent × Current 24K price per gram
Estimated Zakat = Zakatable gold value × 2.5%

The familiar 2.5% rate equals one-fortieth of qualifying monetary wealth. See our Zakat Percentage guide for a broader explanation. The rate should not be generalized to every classical category of Zakat, but it is the standard calculation used for qualifying gold and monetary wealth.

What Is the Nisab for Gold?

Nisab is the minimum qualifying wealth threshold. A widely used contemporary gold benchmark is approximately 87.48 grams. Some scholars and organizations use a conversion around 85 grams because classical weights are converted differently. Our calculator therefore shows both conventions rather than pretending that a minor conversion difference does not exist.

The gold Nisab's currency value changes with the market price of gold. If the current 24K gold price were 100 units per gram purely as an example, an 87.48-gram threshold would equal 8,748 currency units. Do not use that illustrative price as a current market quote. For a full discussion of gold and silver thresholds, see Zakat Nisab.

Gold Nisab and the Evidence for Zakat on Gold

Gold and silver are established Zakat categories in Islamic law. In Sunan Abi Dawud 1573, a report concerning gold mentions the twenty-dinar threshold and half a dinar due on twenty dinars after a year. Scholars have discussed hadith chains and classical weight conversions in detail, which is one reason modern organizations can present slightly different gram equivalents.

For practical calculation, use the recognized benchmark followed by your trusted scholar or Zakat authority and apply it consistently. A small difference between modern gram conventions should not be hidden from users.

Gold Weight: Grams, Tola and Troy Ounces

UnitConversion Used by CalculatorTypical Use
Gram1 gramInternational jewellery and bullion weights
Tola≈ 11.6638 gramsCommon in South Asian gold markets
Troy ounce≈ 31.1035 gramsInternational precious-metal markets

Always distinguish a troy ounce from an ordinary avoirdupois ounce. Precious metals are normally quoted in troy ounces. Mixing the two units can produce an incorrect result.

How Gold Purity Changes the Calculation

Karat describes the proportion of gold in an alloy. Twenty-four karat is treated as pure gold for ordinary calculation, while lower karats contain a smaller proportion of gold. The calculator uses standard mathematical purity factors.

Do You Pay Zakat on Gold Jewellery?

This question has a recognized juristic disagreement. In Hanafi jurisprudence, qualifying gold and silver jewellery is generally included in Zakat even when it is kept for permissible personal use. Other schools contain exemptions for ordinary permissible personal jewellery subject to their conditions. Jewellery held as investment, savings or trade can also be treated differently from ordinary personal adornment.

A worldwide calculator should therefore not issue a universal fatwa by automatically declaring every ring, bracelet or necklace zakatable or exempt. Decide what gold should be included according to reliable scholarly guidance, then use the calculator for the arithmetic. Our Zakat Eligibility guide explains the broader eligibility framework.

Should Stones and Diamonds Be Included?

If jewellery contains diamonds, gemstones or other non-gold materials, do not automatically treat the entire gross jewellery weight as pure gold. Ideally, use the actual gold weight supplied by a jeweller or reliable documentation. The legal treatment of valuable stones can depend on whether they are personal possessions, trade inventory or another type of asset.

This calculator is specifically designed for gold. If a jewellery item is being held for resale as business inventory, its Zakat treatment may fall under trade-goods rules rather than a simple personal-gold calculation.

Which Gold Price Should I Enter?

Enter the current 24K gold price per gram in the currency in which you want the result. The tool intentionally asks you to enter the price instead of storing a fixed “2027 gold price,” because market prices change continuously and a hard-coded value would become stale.

If your local source quotes only 22K jewellery prices, either obtain a reliable 24K per-gram market price or make the necessary conversion carefully. Also distinguish the underlying gold value from retail making charges. Jewellery workmanship is not the same thing as gold content.

Worked Example: 22K Gold

Suppose a person has 120 grams of 22K gold that is zakatable under the scholarly view they follow. At 91.67% purity, the pure-gold equivalent is approximately 110 grams. Assume only for illustration that 24K gold is worth 100 currency units per gram.

120g × 0.9167 ≈ 110g pure gold
110g × 100 = 11,000 currency units
11,000 × 2.5% = 275 currency units estimated Zakat

Because approximately 110 grams of pure-gold equivalent is above an 87.48-gram gold benchmark, the example is above that selected threshold. A real case must still satisfy the relevant Islamic conditions, including the applicable timing rule.

What Is Hawl for Gold Zakat?

Hawl refers to the relevant lunar-year period for wealth categories to which that condition applies. Zakat is not simply triggered by owning gold for a few moments. The rules concerning when wealth reaches Nisab, remains above it, or changes during the year contain details and differences among legal schools.

If your gold holdings fluctuate around Nisab or you acquire substantial gold during the year, follow the method of a qualified scholar rather than assuming that every acquisition must be tracked identically. Our When to Pay Zakat guide covers annual timing more broadly.

Gold Nisab vs Silver Nisab

For a page calculating Zakat specifically on gold, a gold threshold is naturally relevant. For cash and mixed monetary wealth, however, contemporary scholars and Zakat organizations discuss whether gold or silver Nisab should be used. Silver usually produces a lower currency threshold in today's market.

If you have cash, bank savings, business assets, investments and precious metals together, use the broader Zakat Calculator, which supports gold, silver and custom Nisab choices. The gold-only calculator is intended for focused gold valuation.

Gold Zakat Calculation Step by Step

1. Determine Which Gold Is Zakatable

Apply the scholarly view you follow, especially if the gold is permissible personal jewellery rather than savings, investment or trade stock.

2. Find the Actual Gold Weight

Use grams, tola or troy ounces. Exclude stones and non-gold components where the actual gold weight is known.

3. Select the Correct Purity

Choose 24K, 22K, 21K or 18K so the calculator can estimate the pure-gold equivalent.

4. Enter the Current 24K Price Per Gram

Use a reliable current market value in your chosen currency rather than an old fixed price.

5. Check the Applicable Nisab

Use the recognized gold-weight convention followed by your scholarly method. The calculator provides 87.48g and 85g options.

6. Calculate 2.5% When the Conditions Are Met

The calculator multiplies qualifying gold value by 0.025 when the pure-gold equivalent reaches the selected threshold. Confirm any fiqh-specific conditions separately.

Common Gold Zakat Mistakes

  • Ignoring purity: 18K, 21K and 22K jewellery do not contain the same gold proportion as 24K.
  • Using total jewellery weight including stones: this can overstate actual gold content.
  • Using a stale gold price: calculate with a current market price.
  • Confusing ounces: precious metals use troy ounces.
  • Adding making charges as gold value: workmanship charges are not additional grams of gold.
  • Ignoring the jewellery disagreement: personal-use jewellery is treated differently among schools.
  • Confusing Nisab with the Zakat rate: Nisab is the threshold; 2.5% is the standard rate for qualifying gold wealth.
  • Looking only at gold when you own mixed assets: cash and other zakatable wealth may also need to be assessed.
