Zakat al-Fitr – Amount, Rules, Who Pays & When to Give
Learn Zakat al-Fitr rules, who must pay, the one-sa' amount, food versus cash, when to give Fitrana, family calculation and important madhhab differences.
Zakat al-Fitr, also called Sadaqat al-Fitr and commonly called Fitrana in parts of South Asia, is the special charity connected with the end of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr. It is distinct from annual wealth Zakat: it is assessed per person rather than as 2.5% of a portfolio, has its own timing, and is traditionally expressed as a measure of staple food.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ prescribed Zakat al-Fitr for Muslims and ordered that it be delivered before people went out for the Eid prayer. Sahih al-Bukhari 1503 reports one sa' of dates or barley and explicitly mentions male and female, young and old. This guide explains who pays, how the amount is determined, food versus cash, timing, recipients and the major fiqh differences that matter in practice.
Important for Ramadan 2027: There is no honest single worldwide cash figure for Zakat al-Fitr. Local food prices, the food used for valuation, measurement conventions and scholarly guidance differ. Check the 2027 amount announced by a trusted local mosque, scholar or recognized Islamic charity in your country.
What Is Zakat al-Fitr?
Zakat al-Fitr is a prescribed charity associated with completing Ramadan. It helps the needy share in the celebration of Eid and should not be confused with the ordinary annual Zakat discussed in our What Is Zakat? guide.
The primary textual basis is clear. Ibn Umar reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prescribed one sa' of dates or barley as Zakat al-Fitr for Muslims and ordered its payment before the Eid prayer. Abu Sa'id al-Khudri also reported giving a sa' of food, barley, dates, dried cheese or raisins; see Sahih al-Bukhari 1506.

Who Has to Pay Zakat al-Fitr?
The hadith language includes Muslims who are male or female, young or old. In practical fiqh, however, the financial threshold and who pays on behalf of dependants require more detail.
In the Hanafi school, Zakat al-Fitr is generally obligatory on a Muslim who possesses the relevant Nisab beyond basic needs at the applicable time; the Hanafi treatment is not simply identical to the Hawl-based annual Zakat test. Other Sunni schools commonly frame the condition around having surplus food/means for oneself and dependants for the relevant day and night, rather than requiring the ordinary annual-Zakat Nisab in the same way.
Because these thresholds are not identical, a person with limited means should follow qualified guidance for their school rather than assuming that an online annual-Zakat eligibility result automatically answers the Fitrana question.
Who Pays for Children and Dependants?
The reports explicitly mention the young, and Sahih al-Bukhari 1511 records Ibn Umar giving on behalf of young members of his household. Classical jurists developed detailed rules about a person's responsibility for dependants.
A parent or household provider commonly pays for eligible dependent children, but rules concerning an adult spouse, adult children, independent relatives and servants are not identical across schools or circumstances. A husband may pay on behalf of his wife where that accords with the applicable fiqh, and voluntary payment on another person's behalf can also involve consent questions. For a mixed household of independent adults, do not assume that one person is automatically legally responsible for everyone.
How Much Is Zakat al-Fitr?
The core Prophetic measure in the authentic reports is one sa' for the specified foods. A sa' is a classical volume measure, not originally a fixed kilogram weight. This distinction matters because a container-volume of dates, rice and wheat will not all weigh exactly the same.
Modern organizations therefore publish different approximate kilogram equivalents. Even widely used references can differ around the conversion. The safest practical approach is to follow a reliable local authority's stated measure for the staple food being distributed rather than treating one internet kilogram figure as universally exact.
| Basis | Practical Meaning |
|---|---|
| Classical measure | One sa' per person in the principal hadith reports |
| Food weight | Approximation varies with food and conversion methodology |
| Cash valuation | Depends on local food price and the scholarly method followed |
| Family total | Per-person amount multiplied by the number for whom payment is due |
Which Foods Can Be Given?
Abu Sa'id's report lists food, barley, dates, dried cheese and raisins. Jurists discuss these reports in relation to staple foods and local dietary practice. In many modern countries, organizations distribute rice, flour, wheat or another staple suitable for recipients.
The objective is not to choose an inconvenient food merely because it appears in an English translation of a historical report. At the same time, those who follow the food-only position should ensure that what reaches the recipient is an appropriate staple and meets the required quantity.
Can Zakat al-Fitr Be Paid in Cash?
This is one of the most important areas of legitimate scholarly disagreement. The Hanafi school permits paying the monetary value of Zakat al-Fitr. Other jurists have traditionally emphasized giving the prescribed food itself, based on the form stated in the hadith. Contemporary scholars and fatwa institutions continue to differ, sometimes also considering which method better serves poor recipients in a particular setting.
Egypt's Dar al-Ifta, for example, explicitly discusses the permissibility of cash and the timing differences among schools. This is a fiqh choice, not a question that should be disguised as unanimous consensus.
Practical rule: Follow a trusted scholar or institution consistent with your fiqh approach. If an organization collects cash and then purchases and distributes food as your agent, that arrangement should also be understood according to how the organization operates and the guidance you follow.
Zakat al-Fitr Amount for 2027
A website should not invent a worldwide “2027 Fitrana amount.” A dollar amount in the United States cannot simply be copied for Pakistan, the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia or another country. Even two organizations in one country may announce different figures because they value different staple foods or use different measurement and pricing methods.
Near the end of Ramadan 2027, check a current announcement from a trusted local mosque or recognized Islamic organization. Make sure the figure specifically says Zakat al-Fitr/Fitrana per person, not Fidya, Kaffarah or annual Zakat.
When Should Zakat al-Fitr Be Paid?
The strongest practical deadline is before the Eid prayer. Sahih al-Bukhari 1509 states that the Prophet ﷺ ordered Zakat al-Fitr to be paid before people went out for the Eid prayer.
The Companions also had a practice of giving it shortly beforehand. Bukhari 1511 reports payment a day or two before Eid. This provides strong evidence for paying sufficiently early that distribution can actually reach recipients before the celebration.
Can You Pay Zakat al-Fitr at the Beginning of Ramadan?
The schools differ on how early payment may be made. The established Shafi'i position and a recognized Hanafi position permit earlier payment during Ramadan, while Maliki and Hanbali discussions are generally more restrictive, with the practice of one or two days before Eid carrying particular weight.
There are also finer details within the schools, so a blanket statement that “everyone may pay from Ramadan 1” or “nobody may pay until the final two days” is misleading. If donating through an organization, also distinguish the date you transfer money from the date it acts as your agent and delivers the Zakat al-Fitr.
What Is the Best Time to Pay?
For a person who wants to avoid last-minute failure, the practical goal is to arrange payment early enough for valid distribution while remaining within the timing permitted by the fiqh position being followed. Waiting until immediately before the Eid prayer can create a logistical problem when a charity needs time to purchase food, transfer funds or identify recipients.
Our Eid al-Fitr guide explains the festival itself, while When to Pay Zakat covers the separate annual wealth-Zakat schedule.
Who Can Receive Zakat al-Fitr?
Zakat al-Fitr is directed to those entitled to receive this prescribed charity, with the poor and needy central to its purpose. Jurists differ over whether its recipient categories are exactly coextensive with all eight Qur'anic categories of ordinary Zakat or should be focused more specifically on the poor and needy.
For ordinary Zakat, Qur'an 9:60 sets out the recipient categories. For Fitrana, use a trustworthy local distribution channel that identifies eligible recipients rather than handing it indiscriminately to any charitable project.
Can Zakat al-Fitr Be Sent to Another Country?
Local distribution has clear practical value because it supports needy Muslims in the community celebrating Eid. However, scholars discuss transferring Zakat where there is greater need, relatives are eligible, or other legitimate reasons exist. Cross-border charity also creates timing concerns: the donation must be processed and distributed according to the applicable deadline, not merely clicked online before Eid prayer.
If using an international charity, check whether it clearly explains when and how Zakat al-Fitr is distributed.
What If Zakat al-Fitr Is Paid Late?
Deliberately postponing the payment beyond its prescribed time should not be treated casually. A report in Sunan Abi Dawud distinguishes the charity paid before the prayer from charity given afterward. Scholars discuss the legal consequences and whether a missed obligation remains due, but a person who has missed the time should not simply abandon it.
Pay what remains due as soon as possible and, especially where the delay was deliberate or the circumstances are unusual, seek reliable scholarly advice. The safe planning lesson is straightforward: do not wait until the Eid prayer is about to begin.
How to Calculate Zakat al-Fitr for a Family
1. Determine Who Is Included
Identify the people for whom you are responsible under the fiqh position you follow. Do not automatically count every relative who happens to be staying in the same house.
2. Find the Valid Per-Person Amount
Use the required food quantity or a current local cash valuation if you follow a position permitting cash.
3. Multiply by the Number of People
If the valid local amount were hypothetically 12 currency units per person and you were responsible for five people, the total would be 60. This is only an arithmetic example, not a 2027 Fitrana rate.
4. Arrange Distribution Before the Deadline
Allow enough time for the recipient or appointed charity to receive/distribute it according to the timing rules you follow.
| Example | People | Hypothetical Local Rate | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Individual | 1 | 12 | 12 |
| Family example | 4 | 12 | 48 |
| Family example | 6 | 12 | 72 |
Does Zakat al-Fitr Need Nisab?
This cannot be answered with one universal yes/no formula across all schools. Hanafi jurisprudence uses a Nisab-related financial threshold for the payer, though its treatment differs from ordinary Hawl-based wealth Zakat. Other schools generally formulate ability around possessing surplus provision beyond essential needs for the relevant period.
Therefore, do not take the gold/silver threshold from our Zakat Nisab page and automatically assume every school applies it identically to Zakat al-Fitr.
Zakat al-Fitr and Intention
Zakat al-Fitr is worship, so intention matters. You do not need to embarrass a recipient by announcing that the food or money is Zakat al-Fitr. When using a charity as an agent, make the intention for the required payment and use an organization that can distribute it correctly and on time.
Common Zakat al-Fitr Mistakes
- Confusing Fitrana with annual Zakat: they have different calculations and timing.
- Publishing one global 2027 cash amount: local valuations and methods differ.
- Calling one sa' an absolutely fixed kilogram figure: the classical sa' is a volume measure and weight varies by food.
- Ignoring the cash-versus-food disagreement: Hanafi and other approaches should be represented accurately.
- Waiting until after Eid prayer: authentic reports emphasize payment before the prayer.
- Assuming one adult automatically owes for every adult in the household: dependency and ownership rules require care.
- Using the annual Zakat Calculator for Fitrana: 2.5% of wealth is not the Zakat al-Fitr formula.
- Sending money without checking distribution timing: an online transfer is not useful if the appointed agent cannot distribute it in time.
